My Computer Is Running Slow For Some Reason

If you feel your desktop or laptop is running slow, there are a few things you can do. First test the hard drive for errors. Most manufacturers have a program to test a Sata Hard Drive and a SSD drive. Next you can test the memory in your computer with a free program called Memtest 86+, Microsoft also makes a free memory test program. If any are failing, you will need to replace them. As far as a hard drive goes, you can purchase a program called Acronis and Clone the bad drive to the new one. The other choice is to run the back up program in the control panel to an 4tb external hard drive . You may also turn on File History, as this only backs up the Data. Then you can install the new drive and run the recovery or restore to it.

The next thing to check for are infections. These can be Viruses, Spyware, Adware and Malware.  The 3 main free programs to use are Free Malwarebytes, Free Roguekiller and Free ADW Cleaner. There are others such as Super Antispyware and more. I would check any program for problems before installing it.  After you install these, run them in the Safe Mode with Networking. Anything found should be quarantined and removed. If you see anything your not sure of, Google It and determine if it is in fact an infection.

Once you are done and back in the normal mode, run the Back Up again to the External Hard Drive. One other thing you can check for is how much Free Space you have on your Hard Drive. Some manufacturers with install a small 128gb or 250gb SSD as the boot drive and then a 2tb Sata Hard Drive as a Data Drive.  If the SSD is running out of space, you should install a new larger 1tb or larger SSD and run the recovery from the back up external drive to it. The other choice is to clone the smaller ssd to the new larger ssd. I have seen occasions where this did not work properly.

If you can't run the back up or the cloning, then your only choice is to install a fresh install of windows 10 and move the data back in place. You can move the Data back in place using the File History. Make sure to blow out any built up dust in the computer. Inspect the Motherboard for any popped or bulging Capacitors as they may be leaking. If you see this, you would have to replace the motherboard with the exact same make, model and revision. Be careful not to damage anything with Static Electricity.

Can I Repair My Desktop, Laptop or Tablet Computer ?

The answer to the above question, is yes you certainly can repair your own Desktop, Laptop or Tablet Computer. There are a few different things that you should take into consideration first. You don't want to cause damage to your computer equipment and do not lose your data. I would suggest that you have the proper tools to do the job. You can purchase these tool kits above and search for others.

  1. Is the Computer still under Warranty ?

  2. Did you save your Data First ?

  3. Have you Backed Up your computer to an External Hard Drive ?

  4. Do you have the Equipment to practice ESD Protection ?

  5. If you feel you can not do the Repair, contact a local Computer Service Center with Good Certifications.

If you desktop, laptop or tablet is under warranty, contact the manufacturer and make arrangements to send it in for warranty repair. Some computer service centers will try to do this for you and charge you. I can tell you first hand that the Manufactures want to deal with the actual customer and not someone else. Believe me, I have seen the computer service center person start arguing with the manufacturer to get their way.

Always make sure you have backed up you data first, if possible. This all depends on what is wrong with your computer.  If the computer is running, you could connect an External Hard Drive and use the back up program that is in the control panel. Your other option is to remove the hard drive, connect it to another computer and bulk copy the data to another drive. There are programs available, such as Acronis, that can perform this back up to another device. If a virus is involved, be very careful, so you don't spread the infection.

Now you will need to have the proper equipment to perform the repair. Desktops, will generally need the typical repair tools, such as screw drivers and small wrenches or nut drivers. If you are working with a laptop, you will need a good laptop repair tool kit. If you are dealing with a tablet, it may be better to send it to the manufacturer. This is, because they were not meant to be taken apart and you can damage more parts in the process. Laptops, involve a lot of screws and plastic parts with latches, so have a good place to keep the screws and separate the different sizes.

Generally, the laptop repair tool kit will come with an ESD Wrist Strap - USE IT. You can always a ESD Mat and a ESD Wrist Strap. Make sure you ground the esd mat properly. It is very easy to damage a component with static electricity and not even know it. You don't have to see and feel the zap to cause the damage. You could damage parts and they may work for a Day, Month or Year before completely failing.

If you have to take your computer to a service center, make sure they are properly certified with their A+ Certification, Printer Certifications and Network Certifications. Believe me I have seen to technicians cause so real damage and then you have an upset or angry customer. I have seen service centers tell people they are qualified and they are not. I would suggest to have a tour of the service center and pay attention to what they have on their benches and what they are doing. I have seen people have esd mats that are not even grounded. I have also seen technicians place the motherboard for example on top of the esd bag. This is a big time problem, because they are putting all ground points to ground and static damage can easily happen.

So basically save your money and do the repair yourself.
